Block Parent Program
It's a concept that is very simple, very efficient and very essential to the welfare of every neighborhood. In the most fundamental terms, a Block Parent is any responsible adult who cares enough about the well-being of children and other persons to volunteer his or her home as a safe refuge when a need arises. A sign in the window lets children in distress know that a Block Parent is home to provide a haven. And even
when there is no cause for concern, the sign can act as a deterrent to potential offenders who can quickly conclude that the neighborhood has its own safety support system. Block Parents have no legal status except their natural status as private citizens. They are simply volunteers who have agreed to act as sensible, responsible adults in an emergency situation in the community.
Who May Be A Block Parent?
Any responsible citizen, aged 12 years and over who: cares about the wellbeing of everyone, especially children. Has been screened by the Police Service, and is willing to provide help at any time.
What is The Block Parent Sign?
An easy-to-identify graphic design to be placed inside a window where it is clearly visible from the street. An indication to children and adults, who pass by, that they will receive immediate help at this home for any emergency. An indication to criminals or troublemakers, that children in this community have been taught how to deal with strangers, and that the citizens are alert.
When is The Block parent Sign Displayed?
Only when someone over the age of 12 who has been screened by the Police Service, is available in the home. There is no change in lifestyle. If the Block Parent is unavailable for any reason he or she removes the sign. Absence of the sign does not mean the house is unattended.
But is it Really Necessary?
The worst situation the Block Parent will ever have to contend with is a frightened child. If it was your child, wouldn't you say that was reason enough? Pease do your part by explaining the Block Parent Program to your children. Instruct them to respect the privilege and not abuse it, and teach them to hold these Block Parents in high regard.
What Does The Block Parent Do?
- Offer help from dangerous or frightening situations.
- Offer assistance to persons in distress by phoning the Police or home of the child
- Assist the Police by reporting suspicious or criminal activity in the neighborhood.
- Remove sign when not available.
All new Block Parents receive instructions on proper procedures.
The Block Parent is Not Expected to...
- Provide food or beverage.
- Provide toilet facilities
- Provide transportation.
- Administer first aid.
- Leave his or her home to break up fights.
- Actively engage any dangerous person.
The Block Parent Program is a citizen action program at the community level, and is wholly dependant on citizen involvement on a voluntary basis. It is concerned citizens and the Police, working together within the community to make this town a safe and healthy place in which to live and raise a family.
